C’est à deux heures de route de L.A, entre Palm Desert et Joshua Tree, niché dans des canyons ou des communautés en ruine que naquit le stoner, à l’occasion des premières generator parties à la fin des 80's. Entre raves punk et jam sessions clandestines sous influences, elles allaient aboutir à la naissance de Kyuss, et bien plus tard à celle des Queens Of The Stone Age. Comme le grunge, cousin des contrées plus humides, le stoner n’a pas d’autre réelle signification qu’un argot des 70's signifiant un état de défonce — mais il évoque une scène qui embrasse à la fois les racines du metal plombé, Black Sabbath en tête, et des inclinations plus ouvertement psychédéliques. Outre les figures populaires, désormais patrimoine du classic rock, cette anthologie explore toute la richesse du stoner.

Jean-Charles Desgroux, né en 1975 à Biarritz, est un spécialiste du hard rock et du heavy metal. Ayant œuvré pour Rock Sound, Crossroads ou Rock&Folk, il est aujourd’hui animateur radio sur Heavy1, et a déjà publié les biographies d’Alice Cooper ou encore Iggy Pop chez Le mot et le reste.
